Acupuncture is thought to ease chronic pain by affecting neurotransmitters, hormone levels, and the immune system. Acupuncture has been shown to increase levels of endorphins in the body. Endorphins are primarily thought of as the “feel happy” hormones, but they are also the body’s natural painkiller. Increasing the natural level of endorphins in the body may be how acupuncture is able to effectively help manage chronic pain.
The exact mechanism of how acupuncture provides pain relief is unknown but more and more research on the subject is showing that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of chronic pain and is therefore a reasonable healthcare option.
